Dictionary: Cambridge Dictionaries Online - Search for a word and get a brief definition and example of usage.

Encyclopedia: Columbia Encyclopedia - Containing nearly 51,000 entries (marshalling six and one-half million words on a vast range of topics), and with more than 80,000 hypertext cross references, the Columbia Online encyclopedia lacks images, but is a useful source of information about a huge range of topics.

Research Finder - An online gateway to researchers, research capability and emerging technologies in Australia's research organisations.

Literature

700+ great sites for kids - They provide a list of authors that you might be looking at or want to write to.

A pocket full of rhymes - One of the games is to work out what the things are from the rhymes. 

Read inspiring stories - You then have an opportunity to write something and send it in. It may even be published.

Sunshine Online - Offers projects, Lesson Plans, Kids into Action and Education Products Online from Sunshine Australia.

Bookworm at Kids Read -  This has three categories: books by reading level, meet the authors and cool stuff. Find out about Harry Potter, Furbies and lots of other cool stuff. 

Harry Potter - The official Harry Potter site from publisher Scholastic includes information about the books, the characters, R.K.Rowlings the author and quizzes. 

Eric Carle - The official website for Eric Carle, the author of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and other stories.

The Routes of English - This site from the BBC traces the origins of the English language following its twists and turns over centuries.

English and its History - Comprehensive site with information and translations to compare Old English and Middle English with our modern language.

World Wide Words - World Wide Words explores the English language from a British viewpoint. Find the history of strange words and phrases, great for crosswords and very entertaining. 

Australian Association for the Teaching of English - Site includes a comprehensive list of web links in its reources section. Invaluable for teachers of English and  English Language.

The Butterfly Life Cycle - The Butterfly Life Cycle is currently featured on this site. This web exploration site, developed by South Australian teacher-librarian, Jackie Miers, provides learning in the areas of Science, Studies of Society and the Environment, English and the Arts and is loosely based on the Webquest model by Tom March. It has excellent links and activities and results in students developing their own slideshow using Kid Pix.

Quia Quia offers the Web's most extensive collection of educational tools and templates. With Quia, you can create 14 types of educational games and activities, quizzes with eight different question types, surveys, Web pages, and much, much more!

SurfnetKids Barbara Feldman has created a great website with links to a huge range of activities for kids. This website will suit children of all ages as well as parents and grandparents. Surfing the Net with Kids Guide to the BEST KID SITES for kids of all ages.

Abiatoir's Active Classroom This is an educational resource for teachers and students. It has been designed for my own class, but will doubtless be of use and interest to other teachers and students, also.
Most New Zealand curriculum areas are covered in this site in the form of assignments (with online hints), problem solving work, NetQuest activities, a book review facility, quizzes, puzzles, adventure mazes, magic tricks, a Hobbit sub-site and more.

From Eastbourne Primary School There are lots of great puzzles for you to try and solve. If you and your friends can't solve them after having a really good try, drop us an email and we will send the answers to you.

Younger Readers Webquest: Each year the Childrens' Book Council of Australia choose a number of books that they think are the best ones published for children and young people in the previous year. These books are Short-Listed. There are a number of categories such as Picture Books, books for very young children,( Early Childhood), Younger Readers' books and books for older students, as well as non-fiction books. Just before Childrens' Book Week (August 19th to 25th this year) the Judges choose the winners from each category and make their announcements. These books become the Books of the Year.

The books that have been short-listed for Younger Readers are the ones in the Younger Readers Webquest.

 The Webquest contains a series of short challenges that students tackle independently.  Teachers need to follow the following simple steps

(1) You should form small groups of about 3-6 people and agree to read one of the books on the Younger Readers' Short-list.

(2) Once you have decided on which book to read and have decided on a Team name you should then....

(3) Register your Team to be part of the email Mailing List with other students around Australia who are also reading the books.

(4) You should attempt the Challenges for the book you chose and discuss your ideas, then...

(5) Mail your responses to the  Younger Readers Mailing List with the name of the book as the Subject of the email.

National Geographic - In the Kids section there are fun things to do related to the environment and animals.

Coolscience - Very slow to load but the activities are simple although the general information at the start is more for the better readers.

Waterwatch Victoria - a very comprehensive site about the Waterwatch programme. The manual is excellent for adult background reading but the in school Waterwatch manual has the same info in children friendly language.  

Gould League - this is the Gould League site and it is an excellent site. It has some easy activities for Primary school level on making food webs and being a science detective. Well worth a visit!

I Spy Project Research Centre - excellent place for the children to begin to search the Net. Gives them a range of sites within a subject area.

Natural Resources and Environment - in the education section there is a Notes Series which provides quite detailed information on a variety of environmental topics. Look for a site about willow trees that has come from the Landcare group in Wodonga!

Australian Ecosystems - In the wildlife section you can choose a ecosystem you would like to investigate.

Kidscom - is a great site. There is a range of things to do but the activity related to this topic is an Animal Game. The children have to choose an animal type (mammal, insect/arachnid or bird) and then by choosing appropriate questions they can discover the identity of the mystery animal. Once they get it right they are given very readable information on that animal. Good for building classification and appropriate questioning skills.

National Archives of Australia Federation - Teacher resources, a gallery of Federation images and information.

Documenting a Democracy - After a search which covered Australia and extended to England, Australia's founding documents are brought together for the first time. An online collection of important documents in Australia's history, which includes transcripts, as well as scaleable images of the original document.

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Website - This website is concerned with learning about indigenous Australia and the learning of Indigenous Australians.

Reconciliation and Social Justice Project - This is a collaborative project of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation and AustLII.

Lore of the Land - This website and accompanying CD-ROM is the result of a cooperative and consultative partnership between indigenous and non indigenous people. It offers visitors the opportunity to explore and discover the richness of Australia's history, the beauty of its geography and the voices of its people giving expression to their love of this land we all share and call home.

Racism No Way - The Racism No Way! project aims to assist school communities and education systems to recognise and address racism in the learning environment. The project is an initiative of the chief executive officers of education systems across Australia.

Hidden Histories - It is the intention of The Museum of Victoria and the Department of Education, Employment and Training, through the Hidden Histories Project, to assist in the documentation of the oral histories of Koorie communities and to increase the wider community's understanding of Koorie culture.

Year of the Outback

2002 International the Year of the Outback The Year of the Outback is about Australia's future as a nation. Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame The Stockman's Hall of Fame is dedicated to those men and women who created the pastoral industry in Australia's outback. 

National Pioneer Womens's Hall of Fame This national project is dedicated to preserving the place of women in history and their special contribution to Australia's Heritage.

Australian Shearer's Hall of Fame Focusing on Australia's vibrant and colourful shearing culture, this museum opened on Australia Day, with a special broadcast from the ABC. Also ABC Shear History.

Rural Legends ABC Rural's reporters have sought out everyday people who have made their own contribution to the rich history of rural life. From the quiet achievers to those who've become household names - across the nation, these people recount their stories with nostalgia, wit and the dry humour that characterises life in rural areas.

Heywire This ABC project aims to give rural youth a voice. Since 1998, Haywire has been the broadcasting the stories of young people in remote areas. Listen to their stories.

The Year of the Outback: The Year of the Outback is a time celebrate and provides an opportunity for students to reflect upon our unique culture and what it means to be Australian.  This collaborative project that has been developed by two of the myinternet Community Leaders and invites students to submit Outback stories, interviews and recipes.  Teachers are encouraged organize an email exchange between a school in a remote region with a class from a city school. This project is open to both primary and secondary schools.

World Environment Day

World Environment Day 2002 The United Nations World Environment Day commemorated each year on June 5, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The theme 'Give the Earth a Chance' calls on each and every one of us to contribute to the healing of the ailing planet.

Earthbeat from the ABC Earthbeat is a diverse and dynamic environment program with a strong emphasis on environmental science. Breaking environmental stories, providing in depth analysis of current green issues, and exploring cutting edge ideas are all  part of the mix, together with grass roots community initiatives and new practical solutions.

Wastewise for Kids The Waste Wise Schools Program has been set up to help schools achieve a whole school approach to waste and litter education, integrating curriculum and waste conscious school operations.

Global Classroom Projects

ARCgrasslands: a Global Classroom Project The Albion Resource Centre (ARC) for Grasslands is a community education facility in St. Albans, adjacent to the Albion Grasslands Reserve and Victoria University. The Albion Grasslands Reserve is a nationally significant reserve which is home to two endangered plants and an endangered animal.

Australian Fungi Information From the Royal Botanic Gardens, fact sheets and information about fungi.

Fascinating Fungi: a Global Classroom Project Children will find and identify fungi (toadstools, mushrooms, etc) at their school and home, photograph and research them and share data via the Internet. Scientific observation and communication using a range of technology will be undertaken. Children from nearby and different schools can share observations via the Internet.

Frogs on the Move: a Global Classroom Project Interested children/schools are encouraged to pursue breeding and  release programs of local species of frogs. The project offers opportunities to discuss and solve breeding and releasing problems, learn more abut Australian frogs and to share in the development, implementation and evaluation of curriculum designed for all year levels

Landcare Links: a Global Classroom Project This project will establish an interactive web page that showcases what Darraweit Guim Primary School is doing in Landcare and will invite schools from Australia and around the world to join our Link page and show what they are doing in relation to Landcare.

Threatened Species Day

National Threatened Species Day National Threatened Species Day was first held on 7 September 1996. It commemorates the death of the Tasmanian Tiger in captivity in  1936. This day aims to encourage the community to prevent further extinctions of Australia's fauna and flora, and to restore endangered species and ecological communities to a secure status in the wild.

Threatened Species Foundation of Australia The Threatened Species Foundation of Australia supports public awareness and education regarding the nature, numbers and causes of species and habitats becoming threatened. It promotes direct action in saving threatened species and habitats.

Threatened Species Network The Threatened Species Network is joint program of WWF and the National Heriatge Trust. The TSN seeks to work cooperatively with government agencies, scientists, educators and community groups in achieving species and habitat conservation.

IUCN Redlist of Threatened Species The IUCN Red List is the world's most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status of plants and animals. It evaluates the extinction risk of thousands of species and subspecies.
