A range of websites for school and home
activities for children
ABCTeach
- A website for teachers, students, parents and student teachers. Full of great
ideas.
Between the Lions
- Part of the bigger PBS site for the Public Broadcasting Service for the US,
some of its areas are linked to shows on television, such as the Teletubbies.
The Between the Lions area of the site develops literacy skills for younger
children. There are a number of stories where children can click on the words to
learn more about them and each story ends with interactive games. It is quite an
engaging site.
The Idea Box
- Although a commercial site from the US, it has many ideas for the
early-childhood teacher. It is not intended for use by students but rather is
full of activities, craft recipes and songs to incorporate in your lesson plans.
It is worth a visit.
Kid Pix
- Kid Pix is a software package that is a must in any primary classroom. Not
only does it teach children hand-eye coordination skills, but also introduces
students to the basic concepts involved in many of the more sophisticated
graphic programs. The Montgomery County Public Schools Early Childhood
Technology Literacy Project website offers many ideas for using technology; be
it dot-to dot, venn diagrams or even creating a slideshow. It has a number of
lesson plans and activities to encourage students to explore Kid Pix to its full
potential.
Animals, Myths and Legends
- Animals, Myths
and Legends is a delightful, award winning Australian site suitable for
primary-age children. There is an activities page where students can do
crosswords, colour-in, search for words and more.
Country Area Program
- This site has been set up by Colin Gould and his Country Area Program team in
New South Wales and has a wealth of information to assist teachers in
integrating technology in the curriculum. The site includes a forum for
discussing projects that work, as well as links to online tutorials, and online
project descriptions.
The Butterfly Life Cycle
- The Butterfly Life Cycle is currently featured on this site. This web
exploration site, developed by South Australian teacher-librarian, Jackie Miers,
provides learning in the areas of Science, Studies of Society and the
Environment, English and the Arts and is loosely based on the Webquest model by
Tom March. It has excellent links and activities and results in students
developing their own slideshow using Kid Pix.
Kid's Space
- The multi-award winning site was launched in March 1995 and has had more than
a million hits. It is a website created for kids and largely written by them. It
aims to foster literacy and cross-cultural understanding, as well as demystify
the internet for younger users. The site has been constructed with large icons,
simple directions (albeit with the help of a raccoon) and is highly interactive.
Several projects include the global story train, which encourages collaborative
story writing as well as children "voting" for their most famous person, and
sharing their stories about their lives and culture. This site is US-based but
has the support and participation from international organisations.
TeacherFirst - This is a collection of sources for
games, puzzles, and contests which encourage students to think in new or
different ways. Some are cooperative projects; others are for individual use.
